Clinical Studies on the Locomotor Diseases of the Out - patients at the Department of Acupuncture and Moxibustion , Kyung Hee Hospital of Oriental Medicine



Abstract
Clinical studies on the diseases of locomotor system were carried on to the 457 out-patients who were under the treatment at the Department of Acupuncture & Moxibustion, Hospital of Oriental Medicine, Kyung Hee University from January 4,1989 to August 31, 1989. The results were obtained as follows.
1. The patient with the disease of locomotor system were 457, which was 65.1 % of the total out-patients at the Department of Acupuncture & Moxibustion. The ratio between female and male was 1.5:1.
2. The distribution by age was the forties, fifties, twenties, thirties, sixties, seventies, teenages and eighties in that order, and 44.4% of them were in the forties and fifties.
3. The most effective result was shown to the thirties. As the age of the patient was older, the effective result was getting decreased.
4. The condition of the disease was classified by the duration of disease : from onset to one week Very Acute, one week to one month Acute, one month to six months Subacute, and above six months Chronic one and their incidence of the duration was distributed by Chronic, Acute, Subacute and Very Acute in that order. The results were shown effective in the order of Very Acute, Subacute, Acute and Chronic.
5. The locomotor diseases by site or lesion was distributed by low back, neck, knee, ankle & foot, shoulder, wrist & hand, hip and elbow in that order.
6. The distribution by the lesion and causes were HIVD and injury of the low back, degenerative changes of the knee, injury of the ankle & foot, HIVD of neck, frozen shoulder, and injury of wrist & hand. The result was shown most effective at the injury cases, while the inflammatory ones indicated lowest effect at this clinical study.
7. The rate of improvement by acupuncture treatment was 80.3 %.
8. The average times of acupuncture was 6 to 7 and it was recorded that at least 6 to 11 times of acupuncture treatment were necessary for the recovery from the locomotor diseases.
